SUPERLEAGUE ERA

JUNE

Steelers coach Alex Dampier denied there was any risk involved in signing new Italian Canadian netminder Piero Greco. Steelers summer shopping spree continued with the signature of new 6ft 3ins import winger Frank Kovacs.

JULY

Injured ice hockey ace Steve Nemeth's Steelers career is in doubt after he criticised the club in the Star over non-payment of his wages. Steelers coach Alex Dampier put an end to weeks of uncertainty over transfer target Jamie Leach declaring " I've got him".

Steelers also brought in new forward Glenn Mulvenna. Piero Greco was brought in to replace Wayne Cowley between the pipes.

SEPTEMBER

Steelers have offered Steve Nemeth an improved contract to return. The two sides have had their differences over the summer but real progress has been made during a series of phone calls between Sheffield and British Colombia.

OCTOBER

Steelers 16-0 annihilation of Hielo Jaca last night was more than just a throw back in English Division one days than a European quarter final. The ludicrously poor visitors were run ragged on Sheffield Arena ice. Steelers were today booking their flight tickets to Finland after romping through in the Europa Cup semi finals. They beat Steaua Bucharest 4-1 and Tilburg Trappers 5-1.

Sheffield Steelers the city's most successful professional sports this decade is for sale at £4m. Millionaire owner George Dodds has already been approached by three prospective buyers.

NOVEMBER

This pay per view boxing is really good value. Sheffield Steelers should have ropes around the rink rather than plexi-glass for last nights bloody clash with Basingstoke Bison. Three players were sent off after a fighting spectacular, Tommy Plommer who took on Doug Sinclair a bout which sparked a bench clearance. The most bizarre night was Steelers goalie Jim Hibbert racing the length of the ice to flatten opposite number Richard Gallace.

Steelers new bull-nosed defenceman arrived in Sheffield today, and he's not here to make friends. Corey Beaulieu sums up his style of play in one word "Rough".

Sheffield Steelers were beaten 7-5 by Norway's Shorhamar after leading 4-1 in the first of their three match Europa Cup semi-final series but made Europe sit up and take notice with a breathtaking 2-2 tie with crack Finnish team HPK Hameenlinna.

Steelers narrowly went down 5-4 in the last semi final to a fast skating team Polymir Novopoletsk.

DECEMBER

Steelers may sell off half their ice hockey franchise to Sheffield hated soccer rivals Leeds Utd. The deal would see United's controlling company Caspian buying the right to play Britain fastest growing indoor sport in West Yorkshire. Caspian has plans for a 15,000 seater home for their new superleague team.

Jason Lafreniere joins the Steelers.

His deceptively lazy style of play nonetheless helped Steelers as ha consistently put numbers up for them. They were also strengthened by growling defenceman Corey Beaulieu and won all but one of the play off qualifiers.

MARCH

Inspired by Ken Priestlay they defeated Cardiff Devils, who had been there nemesis this year, by 5-2.

On to the final and even though they went 1-0 down to Nottingham Panthers they eventually triumphed 3-1 with Lafreniere scoring the crucial third goal.

MAY: Ice Hockey legend Ron Shudra has signalled the end of an era by quitting as player coach of Sheffield Scimitars after just one season in charge. The former NHL star, Steelers best loved ex player, will instead coach his son and teammates in the junior ranks at under-12s.
